San Antonio is full of opportunities to serve and connect with the community. Local charities and organizations help set up sports teams, mentor underprivileged children, clean up parks, care for animals, and impact San Antonio in countless ways. With so many options for any ability and interest, it will be easy to make a fuller schedule and a richer life.
Inner City Development
This Westside-based organization serves the community with educational, emergency, and recreational resources. Inner City Development is in need of team coaches, food pantry assistants, counselors, youth program supervisors, grounds maintenance, and more.
San Antonio Parks and Recreation
San Antonio’s parks benefit from helping hands that will plant trees, pick up trash, and remove graffiti. Trail lovers can join the Trail Watch program with a commitment of only four hours per month.
S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization)
S.T.A.R. is a collaboration among the Historic Preservation Association (HPA), the Office of Historic Preservations, San Antonio College, the UTSA College of Architecture and local contractors. These organizations have partnered to repair and maintain homes within historic residential districts as a free service to qualifying homeowners. There are two ways to become involved: oversee a student team as a contractor or sponsor a S.T.A.R. event.
San Antonio Museum of Art
The San Antonio Museum of Art depends on the assistance of enthusiastic lovers of art and history to greet, teach, and serve visitors. The Museum is looking for docents who will relate art and history stories to patrons, especially school-aged children. Visitor Services volunteers, Museum Collegian volunteers, and Museum Teens are welcome to help visitors, staff, and guest artists during open hours and special events.
Animal Care Services
The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services is always looking for volunteers who will groom, bathe, walk and interact with love-starved critters. ACS needs help with administrative duties, maintenance, events, laundry, and more. ACS also seeks open homes and hearts for orphaned, under socialized, sick, and injured animals through its Foster Program.
United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County
The United Way sponsors programs that serve youth and the elderly, provide food and toiletry items, and much more. Shop for groceries for homebound seniors, or drive them to doctors’ appointments. Help children increase their reading skills, offer grief counseling, or volunteer administrative skills in the United Way office.
